North West Region Waste Management Group, comprising Ballymoney Borough Council, Coleraine Borough Council, Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council, Magherafelt District Council, Moyle District Council and Strabane District Council, has announced the shortlist of bidders through to the next stage of its major procurement exercise to deliver new waste management infrastructure facilities to help member Councils meet their obligations under the EU Waste Directive.
The Group aims to achieve this by employing a combination of technologies including MBT and energy recovery.
The shortlist of six bidders (in alphabetical order) is:
- Biffa Waste Services Ltd
- Brickkiln Waste Ltd / United Utilities Plc
- Greenstar Holding Ltd (Greenstar UK)
- One51 PLC / VT Environmental Engineering Ltd
- Quinn Group Ltd
- Shanks Group Plc
Cllr Evelyne Robinson, Chairman of NWRWMG Joint Committee welcomed the selection of the shortlist and said:
“We are delighted with the number and caliber of bidders who are competing in this process .All have demonstrated that they have the economic and financial standing, experience and technical capability to provide the northwest region with a solution that will assist us to meet European targets in a manner that is sustainable.
“The issue of how the region deals effectively with its waste is hugely significant. We must strive to increase our recycling rates and avoid sending reusable materials to landfill. I am pleased that as a region our recycling rate has increased to over 34% and this will be a key pillar in any future solution for this region in dealing with waste. “
The NWRWMG Councils are tasked with ensuring that the area benefits from an environmentally friendly yet cost effective solution to this issue.
The six bidders now enter the next stage of the procurement process where the bidders will begin to identify proposed solutions to offer the NWRWMG for consideration.
